Idag högtidlighålls Världsaidsdagen i hela världen. Aidsepidemins miljontals offer hedras sedan 22 år. Detta är också kanske den mest framgångsrika pr-insatsen för en enskild sjukdom någonsin.

Konceptet har därefter kopierats av en mängd andra hälsolobbyister och läkemedelsföretag.

Omkring 60 miljoner som smittats med hiv sedan de första kända fallen för trettio år sedan har dött i epidemin enligt FN-organet Unaids. Över 33 miljoner människor lever som hivsmittade enligt 2009 års statistik. Det är 100 tusen färre fall än 2008. Omkring 5,2 miljoner smittade i fattiga länder har tillgång till bromsmediciner. 2004 var antalet 700 tusen.
