Astronomer Galilei died on this day in 1642 at the age of seventy-seven. His discoveries would change the way humans view Earth and the heavens. He was the first to use a telescope and first to discover the moons of Jupiter, the rings of Saturn, and sunspots. He also confirmed through his observations the Copernican theory that Earth and the planets orbit the sun.
