Apollo 14 rocked toward the moon on this day in 1971. The mission was the first since the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission, which had to turn back to Earth after an explosion. Piloting Apollo 14 was astronaut Alan B Shephard Jr., who became the first American in space in 1961. The Apollo 14 mission allowed Shepard to become the fifth astronaut to walk on the moon. He and follow astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell spent nearly thirtyfour hours on the lunar surface, conducting experiments and collecting rocks. Shephard was also the first to hit a golf ball on the moon. Apollo 14 returned safely to Earth on February 9.
