On this day in 1977, the television miniseries Roots made its debut on ABC. The series, based on Alex Haley´s book about four generations of an African American family, ran for eight consecutive days, becoming the most-watched TV program in American history. Some 100 million people viewed the epic series.

I Sverige hette serien Rötter...en amerikansk tv-serie i åtta avsnitt, ursprungligen sänd i ABC under perioden 23 -30 januari 1977. Serien är baserad på en bok med samma namn av Alex Haley. Historien bygger på Alex Haleys släktforskning, och kretsar kring det amerikanska slaveriet, från Haleys anfader Kunta Kinte som blev bortförd från Gambia år 1767 och framåt i släktleden. Bland skådespelarna i serien finns LeVar Burton och John Amos (yngre och äldre Kunta Kinte) och i en mindre roll O.J Simpson.
